South Dakota Space Grant Consortium
Space/Earth Science Teacher Training
The following teacher training programs by the SD Discovery Center are in addition to other teacher training workshops reported under other Project Activities in SDSGCs FY2018 OEPM report. SDDCs FY18 Space Grant subaward provided $10,522 in support of space and earth science teacher training in which 98 teachers/educators participated in STEM workshops held at various locations around the state. In addition to the 98 teachers who were trained and are reported and counted here, about 120 educators stopped by the SDDC/SDSGC booth at the SD Science & Math Teachers Annual Conference in Huron, SD, 45 teachers at the Native American Education Conference booth, and 40 teachers at the SD Department of Education Conference. The latter three groups did not receive training and are therefore not counted in the tables below. In FY18, teachers from Pierre and Kimball middle schools were mentored by SDDC as they led their students through the YouthAstroNet project provided by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. An exhibit of their work was displayed at the Georgia Morse Middle school parent/teacher conferences and is currently on display at the SD Discovery Center.
As reported under the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) Project Activity section of this FY2018 OEPM report, their Education and Outreach Department (SURF E&O) offers annual teacher professional development workshops in the fields of NASA and space-related curriculum. For FY18, these efforts reached 88 precollege teachers who participated in either a week-long professional development workshop or a semester of online training through SURF E&O. In FY18, the high school curriculum unit called We are Made of Starstuff was heavily revised in order to include a case study of gravity wave GW170817 and multi-messenger astronomy and its ties to nuclear astrophysics and the origin of the elements. The nucleosynthesis activities developed for the revised unit have been used with 30 teachers in an international physics teacher workshop taught at LIGO-Hanford in July 2018 (Management team member Dr. Peggy Norris was an instructor for the course) and also in workshops for 60-70 teachers in Canada and 6 teachers at the American Association of Physics Teachers Winter Meeting. (Because the total of 194 teachers mentioned here that were reached by SURF E&O teacher training are counted elsewhere in the OEPM report under the Project Activity titled Sanford Underground Research Facility, under the Pre-College sub element, they are not duplicated in the table below).
