Fellowships

Program Type: Internship/Fellowship/Scholarship

OSGC Masters Fellowships are open to students who are U.S. citizens enrolled in a STEM-related discipline at one of the following affiliates offering graduate programs: Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Kent State University, The Ohio State University, Ohio University, The University of Akron, University of Cincinnati, University of Dayton, The University of Toledo, Wright State University, and Youngstown University. Underrepresented minority students, women, and persons with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

Awards to Masters 1 students are $16K ($13K from OSGC; $3K from the university as cost sharing) for a calendar year, plus a tuition waiver provided by the university; awards may be extended for an additional 6-months if the students academic performance is acceptable, good progress has been made on the research project, and upon approval of the Campus Representative/Advisor. Masters 1 recipients who are interested an extension are encouraged to follow up with their Campus Representative about their schools policy. Masters 2 awards are $8K ($6.5K from OSGC; $1.5K from the university as cost sharing, plus a tuition waiver). The lead institution (OAI) also contributes to fellowships and scholarships.

Through fellowships, OSGC is investing in the Nations diverse STEM workforce with student research, real-world experiences, utilizing NASA education materials, and engagement of students in NASAs missions. They also support the National Space Grant Program goal to contribute to the Nations science enterprise, NASA current areas of emphasis and aligns with the following: NASAs Strategic Obj. 2.4; NIFS LOB; API ED-18-1 and 2; and ACRA CoSTEM Report Obj. 4, Points 3-5. The program also mirrors OSGC Goal 1, Develop a diverse STEM workforce in Ohio and the Nation.

Interested students should submit a completed application package to the Campus Representative that includes a personal objective statement discussing educational and career goals, resume, and the benefits derived from a Space Grant fellowship, 2 letters of recommendation, transcripts, and a proposed research project. Applications are to be submitted to the appropriate Campus Representative where committees at each school select the awardees (additional information is in the Competitiveness Section).

All awardees are required to engage in a research project under the guidance of a mentor and make a 15-minute PPT presentation on their research project at the Annual Student Research Symposium held in late March or early April at OAI in Cleveland, Ohio. Students are also required to prepare a written report detailing said research and is published in the Symposium Proceedings.

After the OSGC Executive Committee has made their decisions, written award letters are sent to the recipients with an Acceptance Form to be returned to the OSGC Main Office. After receipt of the Acceptance Form, awards are processed in August; funds sent to the Campus Representative for processing.
