UVU Instrumental Rocket Group

Program Type: Higher Education
The UVU Rocket Group performed an interesting project involving activities associated with the total eclipse of Aug. 21, 2017. The question was whether observed changes in the magnetic indices of the ionosphere associate with the shadow of the moon could in anyway lead to a change in cosmic ray muons. The assumption was that there was little chance of this, but to test the idea, student Katerina Merrill along with faculty sponsor Kim Nielsen set up a muon counting experiment in Riverton Wyoming to monitor the event. Merrill subsequently presented her work at the Japan Geoscience Union Meeting in Tokyo, Japan, in May 2018. A stipend of $1600 was provided for Merrill to design, execute and report on the experiment.
