Minnesota Space Grant Consortium

LLTC F/S

Program Type: Internship/Fellowship/Scholarship

Scholarships program for STEM students attending Leech Lake Tribal College (LLTC). The goal of the scholarship program is help Native American and Women succeed at our college and move to a 4-year program. As a Tribal College we are able to directly impact the diversity of students receiving the NASA scholarships. Our past records indicate that we have handed out over 80% of the scholarships to Native American students and over half to women interested in the STEM fields. With LLTC having 90% Native American enrollment we have the opportunity to impact and change the percentage of diversity with regards to minorities and women who enter a STEM field. This directly relates to one of the NASA goals outlined in the Space Grant Consortium. Scholarship applications are handed out one month before the end of the semester with a due date of one week before the semester ends. The awards are handed out at the end of the semester as an incentive for our students to complete their semester successfully and continue with their education goals. Students receiving our awards have shown by the classes they have taken to be strong STEM students as we want them to get their 2 year degree from LLTC and be dedicated to enrolling in a 4-year STEM degree. At LLTC our scholarships are competitive and open to all of our students with no restrictions on the applications. At our Tribal College we have consistently made changes to the scholarship as we serve a unique population and use our scholarship to ensure student success and completion. We have seen the scholarship incentive keep students focused and in school where they may have otherwise dropped out. Handing the scholarships out at the end of the semester has helped LLTC to ensure that students receiving the awards have met all of the criteria set forth by the college and finished the semester with a grade of C or better in each class. Having tested this method we have realized that with it in place we have given scholarships to those who persevered through their classes and prevented students from getting the scholarship and then dropping classes. With our revised scholarship we are ensuring more our students successfully move on to 4-year institutions and major in a STEM field.
