KSU Applied Leadership Program

Program Type: Higher Education

The overall goal of the Applied Leadership Program (NASA Fellows) is to facilitate college students (STEM majors) in developing leadership skills in STEM areas. This includes undergraduate research and participation in professional development in STEM areas at KSU. In addition, college students will actively engage in outreach to encourage pre college students to pursue STEM degrees and give them exposure to career options in STEM disciplines. Throughout the year, the leadership activities will be closely supervised by KSU faculty from the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) from both campuses at KSU. KSU students in the Applied Leadership Program are trained by KSU faculty to design and develop hands-on laboratory exercises in STEM areas for pre-college students from the Cobb County school district. K-12 students get the opportunity to conduct these experiments in our science labs while interacting with college students under the supervision of faculty. These experiments are designed keeping in mind the integration of ideas and concepts of STEM disciplines including both the core sciences such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science as well as common threads which connect one discipline to another and NASAs mission. In addition to these core STEM subjects, we have added Microbiology and Biotechnology which expose students to STEM careers in Applied Sciences. The knowledge gained in this area gives students an overview and understanding of NASA and its biotechnology activities to enhance quality of life on earth. Student led activities across the program, will be hands-on in order to maximize on learning, teaching and research outcomes.
