Missouri Space Grant Consortium
Independent Student Research at UMC

The goal of the project is to attract and support students seeking graduate degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering with special emphasis of attracting underrepresented minority students and women students. We achieve the goal by providing graduate Fellowships & Scholarships and Higher Education Internships. Undergraduate students are selected based on their GPAs (above 3.0) and faculty recommendations. They are matched with faculty mentors to work on research projects. Graduate students are supported through either Scholarships & Fellowships or Higher Education Internships with appointments as Research Assistantships. They work with their faculty advisors on research projects towards their Master of Science theses or Doctor of Philosophy dissertations. Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) faculty with diverse research areas have served as mentors and advisors. The areas of research have included: nonlinear dynamics, Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS), nanomaterials, Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Supported students have completed reports that are presented at conferences and as archival papers in scientific journals as well as theses and dissertations.
