The BYU rocket team attended the 2017 Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) at Spaceport America, NM as one of over 80 teams competing in the event. The objective was to send a student-built 8.8 lb. scientific payload to 10,000 ft. on a student-build rocket. The rocket must be recovered with no damage. The team consisted of 14 students broken into a variety of subteams to accomplish this goal. Subteams included: propulsion, structures, payload, and recovery. The payload consisted of a BYU Spacecraft Group mass simulator payload called Passive Inspection CubeSat (PICS) and the BYU Rocketry Altitude Control Experiment (ACE) Payload.
