Mississippi Space Grant Consortium
Research Infrastructure Programs
The Research Infrastructure component of the program is also used to satisfy the Encourage and Enhance Consortium goals: 1. Encourage and inspire students, particularly those from underrepresented groups, to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and 2. Enhance and nurture a science-based workforce for Mississippi and the Nation.
Objectives/Targets: The MSSGC RI program objectives are to engage STEM faculty (particularly new faculty) in conducting research that is pertinent to NASA needs and to increase research opportunities for MS STEM university students.
The Research Infrastructure program has two components: First, there is a major competitive award coordinated through the central office. Second, some affiliates conduct their own programs. These awards are meant to stimulate work in new research areas by established investigators and also provide new investigators with funds to initiate a research program. All projects must include students (undergraduate and/or graduate).
MSSGC Research Infrastructure Competition/Awards: Two awards of $20,000 is made on a competitive basis to investigators from the Consortium. Recipients are selected by a review panel at the central office.
Research Infrastructure Programs at Affiliates – several affiliates have their own Research Infrastructure program using different criteria for the award. However, all projects are selected through a competitive process. MSSGC will continue to target the goal of 41.1% for all S/F, HE and RI programs with the female ratio of 50%. Evaluation mechanisms are in place to assess student academic progress.
