Macalester Research

Program Type: Research Program

Student researchers work on projects in STEM fields in the earth sciences aligned with NASA’s interests, particularly in the environmental science and global climate change initiatives. Projects focused on: (1) environmental change and climate over the past 20,000 years, (2) fossilization and diagenesis in various sedimentary paleoenvironments, and (3) geochemical approaches to solving geological problems. Many Macalester students supported with MnSGC funds have completed senior honors theses; recently we have begun awarding some MnSGC funding to rising sophomores and juniors to encourage their future participation in STEM disciplines. All students present their research at a symposium in October every year designed to help students effectively communicate and connect with individuals in their field of interest. Many of these students present their research findings at regional and national professional meetings, and a large number of these same students have continued on to graduate programs in the earth sciences. Several students have co-authored peer-reviewed publications based on their summer research conducted with MnSGC funding. All students supported by MnSGC funds work directly with a faculty member and receive a “hands-on” research experience.
