Maryland Space Grant Consortium

Observatory

Program Type: Higher Education

Maryland Space Grant Consortium has an observatory that is located on the roof of the Physics & Astronomy building at Johns Hopkins University. The telescope has a 0.5 m aperture. A graduate student is provided a scholarship/fellowship to serve as the Observatory Fellow. S/he trains students from MDSGC affiliates (mostly from Johns Hopkins University) to operate the telescope and observatory equipment. After being certified, students can sign up to use the telescope for their own projects. In addition, the telescope is open for public viewing every Friday night, weather permitting, and a Tuesday night once a month in conjunction with the monthly public lecture at the Space Telescope Science Institute across the street. Over 800 people visited the observatory during the FY18 reporting timeframe.
