Alabama Space Grant Consortium
CubeSat/Microgravity Student Programs

The ASGC supported CubeSat (orbital picosatellites) building programs that provide interdisciplinary engineering and science students with hands-on experience across the state in FY2018. These programs are all student driven. Established programs are located at AU and UAH and newly formed programs are located at UA, TU and Drake State. We are working to see if any of these programs can become collaborative efforts in the CubeSat world to save on costs. The CubeSat programs at all of the universities and colleges are student satellite development projects that require designing, building, testing and operating an orbital picosatellite. We are planning on rolling out a State-wide CubeSat Initiative so we can collaborate amongst several partners within the state to be able to get a CubeSat launched on the SLS in the future. On 2/2/18, the Campus Directors from the 7 Alabama member institutions agreed to proceed with a new initiative, that being to design and build a collaborative CubeSat, with a targeted launch in 2022. With a strong satellite industry in the Huntsville area and currently 5 CubeSat initiatives ongoing in ASGC member institutions, there is plenty of interest in CubeSats, and the knowledge and readily available infrastructure to succeed. ASGC has solicited and received very positive feedback from potential sponsors for the financial commitments necessary for much of the effort, with as significant portion coming from the ASGC Industrial Members. The CubeSat will be a collaborative workforce development effort among all seven ASGC member institutions. The ASGC hosted a statewide CubeSat Initiative Workshop at the USSRC on November 9, 2018 and will host a statewide CubeSat Mission Concept Review in Tuscaloosa, AL on April 5, 2019.
