StarLab Planetarium Programs

This project activity describes the SDSGC affiliate-provided Planetarium programs that are not described elsewhere in this FY17 OEPM report. During FY18, affiliate SDDC provided 130 Digitarium Planetarium programs to 2,555 precollege students (1,482 girls and 1,073 boys, of whom about 40% were minority) and 282 teachers/parents. As part of the Journey Museum and Learning Centers FY18 Pre-college planetarium programing, an additional 4,207 students were reached. Additionally, on Feb. 22, 2018, students from SDSM&Ts chapter of Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) provided StarLab Planetarium programs to 155 middle school students visiting SDSM&Ts campus as part of the 41st annual Engineers Week events.
In summary, between these three sources (SDDC, Journey Museum, and SEDS), 373 planetarium programs were provided and 285 teachers were present. Among the total number of 6,917 student participants who were reached, about 40% (2,767) were elementary, 50% (3,459) middle school, and 10% (691) high school students.
During FY18, the Journey Museum and Learning Center reached 8,921 students with informal planetarium programming at Neutrino Days, Kids Fair, BAF, and other STEM events. In August 2018, the Journey Museum provided the Uniview Planetarium GeoDome at the Central States Fair in Rapid City, SD, with over 2,500 students participants.
