Oregon Space Grant Consortium
South Metro-Salem STEM Partnership
OSGC supports STEM In-Service Teacher Development via the South Metro-Salem STEM Partnership (SMSP), a regional hub designed to increase access, excitement, and engagement of students in STEM, and experiential learning. SMSP is a collaboration of 13 regional school districts, 6 universities, community colleges, 9 out-of-school programs and business and community partners that is focused on increasing student access and success in STEM fields. Partners include four OSGC higher education affiliates and one informal education affiliate.
SMSP offers in-service teacher programs that provide continuing education to develop proficiency with NASA related, hands-on student projects that can be incorporated into the class curriculum with the intent of focusing on increasing student access and success in the STEM fields and STEM careers. OSGC supports the effort of the SMSP to provide opportunities for in-service educators to bring NASA material and unique STEM content to the classroom through exposure to NASA scientific and technical expertise, thus supporting the NASA Education area of emphasis to engage educators in hands-on curriculum enhancement. To this end, SMSP/Oregon Tech employs a STEM Network Director whose role is to coordinate their strategy of connecting educators and students to industry and community resources in order to provide students with authentic examples and connections to real world application of STEM concepts. A core component of this work has been the establishment of a tool called Oregon Connections, which matches the expertise of STEM professionals with the K-12 and university educators who seek their experience, participation, and support. Oregon Connections serves to provide or augment embedded professional development opportunities for in-service educators to bring NASA material and content to the classroom through exposure to NASA scientific and technical expertise.
The South Metro-Salem STEM Center Partnership is funded as a higher education program because it is managed by Oregon Institute of Technology but the resources are both higher ed and industry that reach the K-12 community.
