New Mexico Space Grant Consortium
NMT K-12 Interactive Rocket Building Dem

his project will enable a team of New Mexico Tech (NMT) students to order and assemble a hands-on demo related to aerodynamics that will be used at the ABQ discovery festival on Nov 3rd and 4th at the ABQ convention center. The event focuses on reaching out to underprivileged students through Big Brothers-Big Sisters of NM. The proposed demo to be put together for this year incorporates an audio-visual example ofNMT students engaged in design projects, as well as a hands-on demo where students build and launch a paper rocket. The NMT students will also demo some 3D printed rockets in the launch tube fixture.
This is an event we have attended four times over the last two years, and will continue to take an array of other demos and displays from engineering and science departments across campus.
The Mechanical Engineering Department at NMT has organized student volunteers and student clubs to attend a number of discovery festivals. Last year the team of Physics, Mechanical Engineering and Materials Engineering students won awards for best in show and kids choice awards (Figure 1). The festival exposes k-12 students to STEM-related fields through booths, demos, and interactive displays from universities and companies in NM. This project will enable us to implement a new interactive demo on aerodynamics of rockets this November at the ABQ festival. (http://discoveryfestivalnm.com/)
The objective of this project will be to excite wonder and encourage learning in STEM fields. The project team will seek to encourage grade school students to seriously pursue a career in STEM. The team plans to accomplish this objective through one on one discussion with grade school students about exciting aerospace projects students are involved in at NMT as well as working with the students to build their own paper rockets which they can test fly in our launch chamber.
